Vieques: Hike to the lighthouse ruins

Our friends Brian and Paul are here to visit from San Francisco. Brian has been taking a ton of great photos and I’ll probably share them in several batches.

This set is from a hike we did out to the ruins of the lighthouse out on the wildlife refuge in Puerto Ferro. (Located here: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=18.096235,-65.423595&spn=0.008546,0.009656&t=h&z=17 ) This has become one of my favorite spots on Vieques. I love taking runs out to there because it’s such a reward when you approach the cliffs and the road opens up to the amazing vista you can see in Brian’s pictures.

I want to find this spot! How close can to drive to this spot? How far is the walk from where you have to leave the car?

Hi Michael, it's pretty easy to get to. When you turn into the reserve from 997 take the immediate right. The road was redone in the past year, so it's an easy drive. You'll go about a mile to the point where there's a closed gate. There's room to park off to the left. It's about 1.5 miles from there.

Hi John: Wendy and I have a house in VB and saw your posting. We're looking for a mountain hike. Do you know of one? I recognize your house I think. Congratulations! We come from Boston often and are always interested in knowing more folks.

Hi Margaret,
We met you and Wendy a little over a year ago when we came to your party with Glenn and Alex. Our house is in Lujan. (Kathy Calhoun is the previous owner.)
The closest to "mountain" would probably be up on Monte Pirata, but I haven't hiked up there. But the "hilly" hike I like goes all along the edge of the refuge and has gorgeous views from the ridge out over the refuge and across to Puerto Rico. The road starts right next to Sol Food (previously Rasta Pasta). It's about a 2 hour hike from there all the way past Destino, VB, the dump, to a beach on north coast. (Is that La Lanchita??)
You can reach me at john_h_hathaway at yahoo.com if you want more info. Happy hiking!

I biked out to the lighthouse! It was fabulous. Why is the road gated where it is?
